Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned as follows: "Azure (Ultramarine Blue), a Gules (Maroon) cross throughout, overall a bezant within an Azure annulet charged with a griffin segreant Or holding in its claws a mullet of six points Vert." Attached below and to each side a tripartite Celeste Blue motto scroll inscribed "COPIAE VALETUDO TUTELA" in Gold letters.

Symbolism
Ultramarine blue represents the Great Lakes region and the state of Michigan, which is symbolized again by the griffin, recalling the French origins of the area. The six points of the star denote the types of mission taskings undertaken by the organization, the first Multifunctional Medical Battalion within the U.S. Army. Green signifies medicine; the maroon cross represents the Medical Branch. The lightning flashes refer to the Early Entry Element of the Multifunctional Medical Battalion and denote speedy response to mission requirements. Gold indicates excellence. The light blue of the motto scroll represents Defense. The motto translates to "Force Health Protection."

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 18 May 2006.
